We made this happen..... Underground Garage Awards, at The Truman Brewery, Brick Lane- Full Version

When we put on the first ever UK Garage Awards Awards at The Old Truman Brewery and Clubavision filmed it, it was like a coalescing of so many things into one. I had met Russ the producer many years before on the clubbing scene. I had put on Acid House Parties in Australia in 1990 culminating in Sydney Opera House and when we came back to UK I had been putting on events all over Britain and Ibiza. We had launched The Old Truman Brewery after a snap decision in 1994 when I left EC1 nightclub where I was doing ‘Phunky Sundays’ with Norris Windross and went to see the premises. With Lee and then Kieron and Claudine and others we brought an entire new movement to Brick Lane - when many thought it would never be possible to get people to leave the west end! All this had happened and we wanted something to celebrate and recognise the UK Garage movement when so few wanted to. We were the underground still. It was a dream come true to put it on at The Old Truman Brewery next to the Vibe Bar, in the space that is now bowling lanes(!). Lisa Nash, my sister from another mister, was presenting, which was double bonus as I had introduced her to Russ too and it was like perfect magic. Gemma was a close friend for many years & was at MTV and Adrian had done QRIUS & La Cosa Nostra and it was hard work on a shoestring but we pulled it off! We had Keith Allen and Rhona Mitra and so many brilliant presenters. A big shout goes out to MC Charlie Brown who I had so many laughs with that evening - he continues to fly with us. To MC Creed who’s been there from the start. To making things happen, out of nothing, when everyone thinks you’re bonkers and it can’t possibly happen. Let the magic commence. We do it, Together always. Alan Miller 2023 The Underground Garage Awards back in 98 was a catalyst for a new movement, bringing the UKG clubbing industry together for the first time, history was made that night!
